Toilet paper in abundance

Roll holders for hanging

At the ironmonger’s in 1927, you can buy all sorts of household goods — from rolling pins and porcelain to a bag of nails. The assortment also includes an elegant toilet roll holder.

The roll holder

From the late nineteenth century, toilet paper was sold on rolls, which created a need for a holder. In the 1920s, the Danish sanitary wholesaler Brødrene Dahl sold refined toilet roll holders bearing its own logo. Here at the ironmonger’s, you can buy this holder.

The ironmonger hangs many of its products outside the shop to show its range.

Did you know?

Did you know that, in popular speech, a roll of “00” toilet paper was nicknamed “500 tickets to the final station”?

Did you know that, according to the original patent drawings for the first toilet paper rolls, the roll should be mounted with the loose end facing away from the wall? A question that families still argue about today.

Seth Wheeler’s patent drawing clearly shows how the toilet roll is designed to be mounted.
