An Exclusive Evening Experience of Christmas in Den Gamle By

Aftenjul (Christmas Evenings) is a truly unique Christmas experience taking place after regular opening hours, when the light of day has gone. Experience the gradual shift in light as you move from a brightly lit pedestrian street and journey back in time to the atmospheric, dimly lit older part of the town. Let the Christmas spirit envelop you with lights in the darkness, fir branches lining the streets, and Christmas trees in the houses.

There is a limited number of tickets available each evening. We recommend buying your ticket in advance to reduce waiting time on arrival.

Practical information

• Children under 18 have free admission – they just need an Evening Christmas ticket.
• Annual Pass holders do not need to reserve a ticket for Evening Christmas.
• There is no student discount on Evening Christmas tickets.
• If you have an Annual Pass from one of our partner organisations that offers a discount at Den Gamle By, the discount also applies to Evening Christmas. Discounted tickets can only be purchased at the ticket office on the day – not online.

Walk in Darkness – Christmas omens & folklore

Christmas is not only light and cheer – it also has a darker side. During Evening Christmas, explore old Yuletide folklore as you step into the darkness between the historic houses, guided by a lantern and a map in your hand. Along the way you will encounter unsettling sights and ancient omens. The only price is your Christmas peace.

Before electric light and flashing Christmas decorations, winter was dark and light was something to be conserved. Experience how the light slowly changes as you leave the bright shopping street and step back in time to the atmospheric, modest lighting of the old town.

Food Stalls & Christmas Brew

At the Christmas stalls on the Town Square, you’ll find æbleskiver in the style of 1616, wild boar sausages, duck and roast pork sandwiches, and Den Gamle By’s Christmas brew or mulled wine.
