How do you move a house?
The Hjørring House Story shows four stories about a house and its occupants – both the people and all the small insects and bugs that live there. In particular, how the house was moved from Hjørring in northern Jutland and reconstructed in Den Gamle By.
The exhibition tells you all about the materials that go into building a house, and what you can find beneath the floorboards and behind the wallpaper. You can also see a huge array of some of the items which are essential in your home. And you might be surprised by some of the insects and bugs that inhabit furniture and walls!
Den Gamle By has acquired unique expertise in moving a block of flats in sections. And it is probably the only museum in the world that moves large buildings in this way. In the Hjørring House Story, there are video films and photographs documenting how bricklayers, carpenters, building archaeologists and other experts operate when a building needs to be documented, dismantled and reconstructed.
