Fairytale Lanterns, Candy Workshop and Winter Tales

Do you know the story behind the "King of Denmark" candy? Or about the enticing nature of Will-o'-the-Wisp?

During the winter holiday, Den Gamle By fills the cold season with stories. Enjoy family moments making homemade fairytale lanterns, visiting the candy workshop, and savouring the seasonal Shrovetide buns. The historical homes are also open for visits, offering time and space for immersion.

Sign up in the Renaissance Courtyard for lantern-making, boiled sweets and winter storytelling. Price: DKK 50 per child for all three activities – pay when you arrive.

Make King of Denmark Candies

Make candies together while listening to the story of the King of Denmark candy. Max 10 children per session.

Enjoy a lunch inspired by 18th-century cuisine in the atmospheric Wineke’s Cellar, lit only by candlelight.

Get your hands in the soil

Winter is also the season for the garden. Learn how the earth can be used to store vegetables as it was done in earlier times, and how to start a kitchen garden directly on the lawn – without even having to dig.

A Time Journey from the Viking Age to Today

Embark on a 1200-year journey through an 800 m² underground universe, showcasing the history of a Danish market town from the Viking Age to today.

Seasonal Shrovetide Buns

Enjoy a traditional Shrovetide bun at Konditoriet Café Bonnich*, Restaurant Gæstgivergården*, or in Wineke’s Cellar.

Explore the 1864 Neighbourhood

See what a merchant’s shop* looked like in the 19th century and explore the magnificent Mintmaster’s Mansion.
