Horses & Carriage Culture in the Market Town

10 – 11 May 2025

Horse-drawn transport takes centre stage as Den Gamle By’s Carriage Stable hosts a weekend devoted to the culture of horses and carriages. The sound of hooves on cobblestones and heavy iron-rimmed wheels will echo through the town all weekend.

On Saturday, the focus is on hoof care, as the farrier fires up the forge, trims hooves, and hot-shoes the heavy horses on the Festival Grounds – while sharing stories of the traditional craft.

On Sunday, the wheelwright fits iron tyres to carriage wheels – and visitors can learn more about this age-old trade.

Both Saturday and Sunday, hackney carriages and various types of traditional historic wagons will be on display at the carriage stand on Ågade.

The Farrier Shoes Horses

In the tent at the Festival Grounds, you can watch the farrier shoe horses and learn how horse-drawn vehicles are maintained. Try putting a harness on model horses and have a chat about horses, carriages, and the culture of driving before the invention of the car.

Saturday

The Wheelwright at Work

Watch the wheelwright fit iron tyres to carriage wheels and hear about this traditional craft.

Sunday
